Mark your calendars

The oral argument of Troy Anthony Davis' appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court of his denial of a new trial has been set for 10 am on November 13, 2007. Davis, you may recall, is the prisoner convicted of murder and sentenced to die on the basis of eyewitness testimony from 9 individuals, of whom 7 have since recanted and claimed police and prosecutorial misconduct pressured them into naming the wrong man. Earlier this year the state board of pardons and paroles granted Davis a rare stay of execution pending a hearing of the new testimony from these witnesses, but that stay was lifted when the Ga Supremes accepted the appeal.

If I can arrange to be away from the office that day, I will try as I did with the Genarlow Wilson oral argument to attend and give you a bird's eye recounting of the proceedings. If I'm not free, hopefully some other legal eagle will cover in my absence.

If you're curious to see a state supreme court argument live and in person, it is remarkably easy to do provided you can get up early enough to be there before the courtroom fills up. Justice is open to all, and the process is quite illuminating to those who have never watched the wheels of justice in action before. Come check it out.

I watched a webcasted argument once. It was interesting and I'm glad the proceedings are made available for viewing that way, but the extreme close-ups of the Justices were sort of scary. Maybe live and in person (and from a distance) is the better way to go.
