Pavarotti has died
I have always had a strong physical reaction to opera. Something about hearing someone pour pure emotion into an aria just gives me chills, and there are moments when I am just overwhelmed and can't help but cry. Hearing Luciano Pavarotti perform the famous "Nessun Dorma" aria from Turandot is a guaranteed overwhelming experience for me every single time I hear it.
Pavarotti was the voice of his generation, and I don't think we have seen or will see in my lifetime a better tenor. After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, he died today at age 71.
Here, from last year's Winter Olympics in Turin, is one of his last performances of his famous Nessun Dorma aria. I have tears in my eyes as I write this, but I'm still going to listen to it 25 more times today at least. That pure, rich, amazing voice is gone.
Rest in peace, Sir.

Thanks for tracking down the video. I saw late last night a note on the web that he was in grave condition, but saw the news of his death in your blog on my Google reader. It is sad. My wife and I fell in love while the Three Tenors CD played. Nessun Dorma seems like a fitting finale. But I've also always loved Rondine al Nido, also pirated on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7CYeSaLZDM#

ps. Too bad about the failed come-back the other night--at least they didn't quit.I'm pretty excited about FSU and Bama playing this year. Ought to be fun. And finally, why not just completely ignore the jackass ex?
