Politics has become downright surreal

OK, seriously. Every right wing Republican is secretly gay, isn't he? Because if last year's Mark Foley and Ted Haggard weirdness wasn't enough evidence, this year's trend of Republican legislators trying to hook up with other men in public restrooms certainly is. Not only did FL State Rep. Bob Allen offer to pay a cop $20 for allowing Allen to give him head, and not only did another Republican operative end up getting killed in some sort of strange gay murder-suicide in Florida...but now U.S. Senator Larry Craig (from Idaho) just pled GUILTY to a charge stemming from an alleged attempt to have some sort of gay sexing in an airport restroom!

I mean I understand that from the sounds of the police report the Larry Craig thing could have been an innocent misunderstanding...but he pled GUILTY! Who the hell does that when it's a bogus trumped up misunderstanding and when you're a conservative US Senator who can hire lots and lots of lawyers and point out to the press and public how stupid this all is? A guy who hopes that the fact of your prosecution and plea never see the light of day, that's who. (You may remember that Craig was outed last year by a blogger, and everyone pretty much forgot about it because the Mark Foley thing consumed all the gay oxygen in the political world for a whole month.)

Meanwhile Wonkette never thought that their "Gay" tag would end up taking over the universe, but here we are with a ridiculous tally of closeted conservatives who've managed to get themselves outed or arrested over the summer and Labor Day isn't even for another week.

It just boggles the mind. I mean I knew that Republicans had a fair amount of self-hatred but this is like off the charts, man. And don't forget that some folks claim Fred Thompson is another closeted one. I mean, if one of the current Republican presidential candidates gets outed, I think my head will flat out explode. I cannot take it anymore.
