Fear of Fucking

So the fundies are considering mounting an all-out legal/political assault on...contraception. That's right, birth control pills, the patch, depo-provera, etc. They believe all chemical contraception causes fertilized eggs to fail to implant in the uterus, which in their minds is equivalent to abortion. (Apparently condoms are ok...for now. Until they reach the "every sperm is sacred" argument and then your Trojans are out the window too.)

While they'll have to find a way around the the seminal (heh) precedent of Griswold v. Connecticut that definitively held the right to privacy includes the right to employ contraception, I have no doubt that some hard right lawyers are hard at work at this very moment at finding a way to either get Griswold overturned or work around it in crafting legislation designed to limit access to contraception in other ways.

OK, so to recap...these folks don't want you to have the choice to abort a pregnancy. They also don't want you to have the ability to prevent a pregnancy in the event you choose to have sex. The underlying, as yet unspoken rationale is obvious--they don't want you to have sex at all unless you are doing so with the intent to procreate.

What world do these people live in? If they could create their ideal world what would it be like? Nobody ever has sex unless they're not only married, but ready to have children? Even married couples can't have sex if they don't want to have children right away? And what about married couples for whom pregnancy is not an option because it is dangerous for the would-be mother or for any baby that might be created? If the woman can't safely carry a pregnancy and/or there is a genetic condition that they can't risk passing on to a child, that couple just doesn't get to have sex at all? EVER?

At its root this is all about a fear of sex for pleasure, and I just don't get that way of thinking. Why does it threaten them so much?

And which is also completely FALSE.

That is not how hormonal birth control works. There are mountains of scientific research about this.

I don't understand how something that is just plain FALSE can be the basis for a campaign to change policy that will affect the lives of millions of people.

You know, I can believe that babies come from magic storks, but it doesn't make it true. And it sure as shit doesn't work as a basis for a political agenda.
