It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like I
have to buy gifts for practically everyone...

So Christmas is upon us whether I like it or not. (Ask me again after December 10th or so and you might find me feeling somewhat warmer on the subject.) And I have to figure out what I'm giving as gifts not only to friends and family, but at the office. This is always the hardest part! I know I have to buy my secretary a gift (and I want to because she so totally rocks) but what about all the paralegals I work with? File clerks? The 3 partners I work for? The copy guy? The other secretaries who helped me out occasionally over the past year when I needed it?

And do you realize HOW MANY FRIGGING GIFTS THAT ADDS UP TO?! I was just trying to make a list, thinking I would get everyone cookie tins from my favorite mail order bakery, but suddenly I was topping $200 just for paralegal and file clerk gifts and that seemed somewhat crazy...particularly when I could put in one good weekend of baking and achieve the same thing for 1/4 the price.

I just never know what is appropriate, and what everyone else will do. I also have no idea how my bosses will react to getting gifts from me, and what sort of gift is appropriate. At my last firm I gave the partner I worked for a silly gift--a 365 paper airplanes desk calendar--and he still was all "you didn't have to do that." But I hear tell of fairly extravagant gift cards that our current boss gives people, so now I'm starting to wonder what sort of things she gets in return.

And don't even get me STARTED on how difficult some of my friends' gifts are going to be this year. I had one all planned out since about March, and then things changed and that gift probably isn't a good idea anymore. Now I'm at a loss on that one too. And my parents can't tell me anything that they particularly want other than stupid little things like my dad's request for a new watchband. Seriously, a watchband? Ugh.

I won't have a ton of time to shop so I'm going to need to plan out a gift list in pretty short order and I am at a total loss. Anyone with ideas or advice is free to help me out in the comments.

I would not do gifts for all the paralegals and file clerks. You could bake one really yummy thing - a breakfast cake or assorted cookies - and leave it in the kitchen or file room with a "Happy Holidays" card. I do that with assorted homemade cookies, and it's always a hit.

Boss - I'm no help. I get mine Dom Perignon from Costco every year, he gets me a spa gift card.

Good luck - I've been too scared to even make the list, so you're way ahead of me!
